3 Homeopathic remedies to support insomnia and sleep disturbances

We all need sleep. We all know how we feel when we don't get enough sleep. This is why sleep is a key pillar of health.

There's no supplement that is as powerful as sleep, period!

And I say this as a chronically sleep deprived Mumma, doin' what I can, when I can. There's often ways we can optimise the quality of sleep (even if we can't change the quantity of sleep), such as ditching blue light, creating a healthy sleep hygiene routine, eating a protein-rich dinner to support natural melatonin production, and using safe, effective natural medicine options to support our circadian rhythm, hormones and sleep.

It's well documented that sleep problems are a risk factor for chronic conditions and disease.

A couple of examples…

We know poor sleep can directly impact immunity. Just one night of poor sleep has been shown to reduce natural killer cell (a white blood cell) activity by 72%.

PMID: 7871104

Poor sleep can cause metabolic issues, circadian misalignment, unexplained weight gain and obesity. One night of poor sleep has been shown to cause an increase in ghrelin, a hunger hormone, which can cause people to eat an additional 385 calories the following 24 hours after a night of poor sleep (this is equivalent to 4-5 slices of bread).

Just think about how you feel when you haven’t had enough good quality sleep - it trickles into everything, from energy, mood, food choices, behaviour to productivity! With that in mind, here’s three of my favourite homeopathic remedies that have been used traditionally to support symptoms associated with sleep disturbances, insomnia and anxiety-related sleep issues.

3 Homeopathic remedies to support insomnia and sleep disturbances:

  • Coffea Cruda - this remedy is specifically indicated for sleep issues when there is mind-chatter; when you're trying to switch off to go to sleep but your thoughts are overactive. The to-list can be swirling around or a recent convo is on repeat. Often there's sleeplessness from 3am, after which only dozing.

  • Gelsemium - this remedy is specifically indicated for sleep issues when there is anxiety that keeps you stimulated and awake; usually to do with anticipation of future events or possible situations, such as stage fright, exam nerves, flying, etc.

  • Sepia - this remedy is specifically indicated for sleep issues when the mother feels worn out, run-down and irritable. It's known as a key women's remedy and is useful for hormone imbalances, menstrual irregularities, thrush, heavy periods and menopause.

These three remedies are available to purchase (for $55) through me as a sleep kit, with a consultation or package.

* Mother's Day special - anyone who books an initial consultation or Restore/Nourished package between the 1st and 5th May 2023, automatically qualifies for a free sleep kit! You'll also receive FREE express post of your kit and a homeopathic e-Book. The total value of the kit is $97.

Other sleep supportive strategies

Keep in mind, there’s a few key things you can do from a health perspective to support sleep, such a:

  • Creating a healthy sleep hygiene routine - ditching screens and bright lights 1-2 hours before bed is crucial

  • Implementing stress management techniques like breathing, yoga and exercise throughout the day

  • Sleep supportive herbal tea such as chamomile, lavender and lemon balm

  • Ensuring you’re eating a nutrient-dense dinner that has at least 30 grams of protein in it - protein contains key amino acids that naturally support melatonin, a sleep hormone

  • Magnesium - a hormone balancing mineral that can be used as a mild sedative and calming mineral, which can be found in green leafy veggies, cacao, nuts and seeds. Magnesium can also be used in a supplemental form; most people benefit from 300mg of magnesium, 30 mins before bed

  • Homeopathic remedies (see above).
