Mixed Berry Jam Recipe

Is there anything better than fresh berry jam?! I love it smothered on sourdough, stirred through yoghurt or added to a smoothie. Your options are endless!

This berry jam is a staple in our fridge. It’s made from just 2 ingredients - berries and chai seeds. Chia seeds are teeny tiny seeds that swell about 10 x their size from their dry weight. Chia seeds are a great source of protein and essential fats, and they help the jam take on a thick tapioca-like consistency!

Most store-bought jams contain 50% sugar and 50% fruit, which means just 1 tablespoon of conventional jam is nearly half of your daily sugar recommendation! This healthy jam can be made from any berries you have in the fridge or freezer.

Berries are rich in polyphenols, which are prebiotics - 'feed’ your native gut bacteria (and remember you’ve got up to 2 kgs of bugs and microbes residing in your gut), and berries are a potent antioxidant hit, to support immunity and healing!

Serves: 12+

Prep time: 2 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes in total

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams berries

  • 2 TBSP chia seeds

  • Optional - 1 TBSP honey

Method:

  1. Add berries to a saucepan and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes, and add honey if you’re using it. Keep your eye on the jam and stir it every minute or two.

  2. Take it off the heat and allow them to cool for a few minutes.

  3. Blend the berries (you can use a potato masher or pop them in a blender and blitz until smooth).

  4. Stir through the chia seeds.

  5. Pour the jam into a sterilised jar and allow it to cool completely then store it in the fridge

I find my jam can last for up to 5-7 days in the fridge (we usually eat it before then!)

Note: I’m stingy by nature, so I buy a big 500 gram bag of frozen organic berries from Coles/Woolies for $10 - the brand is Oob!

Note: Be extra careful when cooking jam - it’s boiling hot and can burn you quite easily if you spill it!
